Huangpu District to spend US$18b in renovating, demolishing old residential buildings

SOME 70,000 residents of downtown Huangpu District can expect a better life as the district government plans to invest heavily in renovating or demolishing old residential buildings over the next five years, the district’s top official announced yesterday.

The district will spend 115 billion yuan (US$18 billion) to demolish or renovate old residential buildings and relocate some residents from next year through 2020, said Weng Zuliang, the district Party chief.

Some 300,000 square meters of old residential buildings in downtown areas will be torn down while about 26,000 residents will be relocated to new buildings, he revealed.

For those old houses that are in better condition, the government will renovate the sanitary and water supply systems to benefit about 50,000 residents, he said.

Huangpu District has the largest number of old residential buildings in downtown covering over 2.5 million square meters.

The first batch of residential sector to be renovated includes the Yuyuan Garden and Taipingqiao areas.

Apart from residential buildings, the district also aims to crack down on illegal stores and markets on the small streets near the city’s major commercial streets such as the Nanjing Road E. and Huaihai Road.
