Doctor, grandfather held for 'murdering baby who had cleft lip'
A DOCTOR and the grandfather of a newborn boy who died in hospital have been held by police on suspicion of murder.
It is believed that the child, who was born with a cleft lip, did not die of natural causes at Chongming No. 2 People’s Hospital last Friday, police told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
The doctor detained, surnamed Zhou, is a vice director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department who has worked as a doctor for some 20 years.
The baby’s grandfather, whose name was not given, is said to have handed himself in to police.
According to police, the grandfather said he acquired a syringe and a chemical from Zhou and injected it into the baby’s head as the child had a cleft lip.
Police said they have yet to determine what the substance is.
The baby, born early last Wednesday, was found dead in the ward by a nurse at about 2:30pm last Friday, police said.
The nurse told police that when she checked on the baby 30 minutes earlier, he was fine.
The child’s mother, who lives in Xianghua Town on Chongming Island, was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday night.
Ji Hui, vice director of the hospital, told Shanghai Television yesterday that the hospital will tighten management of drugs, although no obvious flaws have so far been discovered.
Cleft palate and cleft lip are common conditions, affecting around one in 600 babies in China. They can be corrected by routine surgeries.
