Dodgy drivers to be named, shamed

DRIVERS who switch lanes illegally close to the exits of elevated highways face being named and shamed in real time, traffic police said yesterday.

In a trial operation on the Humin Elevated Highway in Xuhui District, police installed a flashing signal that displays information about drivers who break the rules.

A typical message reads: “XXXXX (license plate) has been caught on camera illegally changing lanes.”

The new system is designed to shame people who violate traffic rules on the city’s highways, police said, adding that if successful, it will be rolled out to other roads.

While there are no additional penalties for being named and shamed, drivers who are caught switching lanes at the exits to elevated highways are fined 200 yuan (US$32) and docked three points from their licenses.

The trial site — at the exit leading to the Inner Ring Road — was selected as lane switching is particularly common and problematic there.

Traffic police had earlier erected barriers in a bid to deter drivers from switching lanes, but they were routinely disregarded and eventually knocked down.
