Dr Love sent to prison for fraud
A MAN was sentenced to three and a half years in prison yesterday at Jiading District People’s Court after being found guilty of cheating his lover out of 300,000 yuan (US$48,300).
Identified only as Miao, the man met his paramour, surnamed Wang, via a dating website in May last year. Both were married at the time.
Prosecutors said Miao, who was living in Shanghai, wooed Wang, a native of north China’s Shanxi Province, by telling her he was a scientist with a PhD from Harvard University.
Wang was impressed and decided to embark on an adulterous relationship with Miao.
The couple briefly lived together in a rented apartment in Shanghai.
Miao, however, was not a graduate of the famed seat of learning, but rather an unemployed husband and father of one.
Soon after moving in together, Miao told Wang he needed money to support a business he owned in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province.
His mistress agreed to lend him 300,000 yuan.
When Wang returned to her hometown in July to divorce her husband, Miao called her to say he had to “disappear” as he had killed a man, the court heard.
She never heard from her lover again, and in August contacted the police.
Miao was apprehended in a hotel in Kunshan, east China’s Jiangsu Province, in September and detained on suspicion of fraud.
