Driver jailed over cyclist’s death
A FORMER taxi driver has been jailed for a year over the death of a cyclist who struck her car door, Songjiang District prosecutors office reported yesterday.
The 53-year-old driver, surnamed Qian, pulled over her car in a cycle lane on November 15 last year.
Without looking in the rearview mirror, the retired cabbie opened her door into which a cyclist crashed, the court heard.
Qian called the emergency services immediately and accompanied the victim, surnamed Zhu, to hospital with medics. Zhu died at the hospital.
Police said Qian was fully responsible as she failed to park her car in a proper place and attempted to get out of her vehicle in a cycle lane.
Qian said she very much regretted what happened and had reached an agreement with Zhu’s family on compensation.
The sum paid was not revealed.
Qian told prosecutors that she didn’t pay attention when opening the door because she was hurrying to get to a restroom at the time.
