Driver left woman to be hit by trucks
A DRIVER who checked on an injured woman he had hit and then callously left her on the highway to be killed by passing trucks has been jailed for 11 years.
The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court judged the driver, surnamed Yang, committed murder rather than a traffic violation as he should have realized the dangers of leaving an injured person on the road.
Yang was also ruled to pay 272,000 yuan (US$40,977) in compensation to the victim's family.
The court heard that Yang was driving home with a friend late on February 6, 2010, and on Huyi highway in Jiading District the car struck a woman. Yang found the woman trapped beneath the front wheel of his car. He pulled her out and heard her groan, but instead of sending the woman to hospital, he left her and drove off, according to Yang's passenger surnamed Zhao.
Yang later surrendered to police. He was told by officers that the 24-year-old victim, surnamed Zhou, had been run over by three passing trucks and died of head injuries. Yang argued in court that his car crushed Zhou to death and that the incident should be treated as a road traffic accident. But surveillance footage showed that Yang's car didn't strike the victim's head.
