Driver to stand trial for death of motorcyclist
A driver who crashed his car into a motorcyclist, who was then run over by another car, is out on bail but will have to stand trial at a later date, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area said yesterday.
The 26-year-old driver, surnamed Ling, is being held responsible by prosecutors for failing to protect the woman motorcyclist, surnamed Zhang, 40, who was riding on the lane reserved for motor vehicles, after hitting into her.
The second driver, surnamed Liu, was charged with secondary responsibility.
At dawn on July 6 last year, Ling was driving along Renmin Road E. and took a left turn when his car collided with Zhang’s electric bicycle. Since it was Ling’s first accident, he was flustered and turned on the warning light for only 10 seconds before turning off the engine and getting off the car to call police.
Ling asked Zhang if she was injured and asked her to move to the side of the road to talk. But Zhang refused to leave the place and instead called a friend to ask her son to pick her up. But several minutes later into the incident, another car driving at high speed hit her again. Zhang was rushed to the hospital but died later from severe injuries.
Prosecutors said although it was the second car which caused Zhang’s death, Ling should be blamed for the death for failing to turn on the warning lights and moving Zhang to a safer place.
Tang Qinfeng, one of the prosecutors who investigated the case, said Ling did not follow the proper driving rules when making the turn.
He should have also turned on the warning lights, Tang said, and alerted passing vehicles after the crash while moving the injured motorcyclist to a safer place.
