Driver who killed traffic police officer jailed for life
A DRIVER, who dragged a traffic cop for nearly 10 meters that led to his death, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court yesterday.
On March 11, traffic police officer Mao Shengquan was on duty at the junction of Wuzhong and Hongxu roads in Minhang District. At around 5:25pm, Mao stopped Sun Haojie’s car for traffic violation.
Immediately after being warned, Sun, 32, cut lanes illegally to take a left turn from a lane that was meant for vehicles to go straight. Mao approached him again but Sun did not stop; instead he stepped on the gas and tried to flee. Mao ran after the car and managed to cling on to the car door. He was dragged for some meters before hitting the ground hard.
Mao, 32, was rushed to Shanghai No.6 People’s Hospital immediately but he died of brain hemorrhage five hours later the same day.
Sun avoided the death penalty because he surrendered and was a first-time offender, according to the court.
