Drivers fail to stop at red lights
RUNNING red lights and speeding are the most common driving violations in Shanghai, according to figures released by the city’s traffic police yesterday.
In the first 11 months of the year, police handled 10.3 million traffic violations, of which 458,000 involved drivers running red lights and 296,000 concerned people speeding.
The figures, released to coincide with National Transport Safety Day, also included 56,000 incidents of vehicles being overloaded, 29,400 cases of drunk driving, and four cases of people driving while under the influence of drugs.
In a bid to combat the growing number of people using their cellphones while driving, police said they will increase the number of motorcycle patrols in the city.
Other targets will be car users who fail to wear seat belts, vehicles creating a hazard by stopping in the middle of the road or at an intersection, and pedestrians crossing roads on a red light, police said.
