Drivers fined for misuse of their cars

A total of 4,960 drivers were found to be using their cars to illegally transport goods along the city’s elevated roads in an ongoing crackdown since February, Shanghai traffic police said yesterday.
The drivers were fined 200 yuan (US$30) for the offense. Those found to have changed the shape and technical data of their vehicles after the date of their registration, faced a further 500 yuan fine, with their cars being towed away and required to be restored to their original status.
Police warn that using cars as trucks poses an enormous danger to road safety. Shanghai bans all trucks on elevated roads.
“There are usually no parting or binding facilities for goods in cars, so the goods will easily tumble when the driver brakes all of a sudden, affecting the safety of the driver and other traffic participants,” said Liu Cheng, an official from the traffic police’s squad managing elevated roads.
