'Driver’s license’ for restaurants
RESTAURANTS that don’t meet city standards face having points deducted in a new “driver’s license” scheme being introduced next year.
Under the initiative, an eatery responsible for a death through food poisoning will lose its entire annual quota of 18 points and will be closed.
Lesser offences will lead to fewer points being lost, though if the tally reaches 18 points in a year, the eatery will be shut down.
The initiative is similar to the deduction of points from a driver’s quota for motoring offences.
The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration listed 49 illegal activities related to food sales, processing, delivery, packaging and food safety that will lead to point losses.
The severity ranges from 18 points to 1.
A restaurant’s annual 18 points will be deducted for a case of food poisoning affecting 10 or more people or which causes a death.
Deductions of 12 points cover 13 offences, including food poisoning of less than 10 people, using ingredients which may damage health, using illegally recycled food and failing to recall products.
If an eatery loses between 12 and 17 points in a year, management will undergo food safety training, said officials.
