Drivers warned over others taking the rap
POLICE yesterday told local motorists not to think that they can get away with persuading someone else to take the rap for motoring offences.
Officers gave details of two cases — including a fatal road traffic accident — in which drivers asked relatives to take the blame.
In one incident, a driver surnamed Meng hit two pedestrians crossing Ruifeng Road in Baoshan District while he was driving at 70 kilometers per hour.
One of the victims of the accident, that occurred about 5am on September 30, later died in hospital.
As the victims lay unconscious, Meng called police before phoning his wife and asking her to persuade her brother, surnamed Liu, to come to the scene and lie that he had been driving.
Police arrived first and Meng told them that Liu had returned home from the crash site to get his driving license.
When Liu showed up, police took him in for questioning alone.
Officers noticed that he was extremely nervous, especially on hearing that one of the victims had died.
Liu is said to have admitted that he took the rap for his brother-in-law.
“I never knew that this was illegal and only wanted to see the victims compensated,” Liu is said to have told police.
Under pressure from his family, Meng later gave himself up.
According to police, Meng later admitted that he had wanted to avoid jail as he is the family breadwinner.
Baoshan District’s prosecutors then authorized the arrest of Meng over the fatal traffic accident and of Liu for taking the blame.
In the other case, a driver surnamed Ren got behind the wheel after drinking at a meal with family and friends in late April.
Noticing police setting up a checkpoint near Jiulong Road in Qingpu District, Ren asked his nephew who was in the car with him to swap seats.
However, police at the checkpoint were suspicious as both men seemed nervous and Ren was drunk.
Under police questioning, they admitted the deception.
Ren was sentenced to two months in detention for drunk driving while his nephew received two months’ detention with probation, police said.
