Drop in job vacancies for civil service

JOB openings for the Shanghai civil service dropped to the lowest level in four years and more than 8 percent from last year.

The online registration for the Shanghai civil service recruitment opens today with only 3,931 positions available for 2016.

The number has slipped steadily after it peaked in 2013 with 4,708 positions compared to 3,733 in 2012. That fall was because the government was downsizing the civil service staff. It will be the first time that the number will drop below 4,000 since 2012.

Though 60 percent of the jobs available do not require related working experiences, most of them are only open to graduates or applicants with higher educational background.

Only eight positions and one for a police commando in the bomb disposal squad are available for applicants with associate degrees.

A doctorate degree is required for two positions for assistants to judges in Xuhui District People’s Court.

Fifteen jobs have been earmarked for people with disabilities, such as office worker at the city’s Party committee, receptionist of social security affairs at the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, and policy researcher at the city’s planning and land resources management bureau. All of them require undergraduate or higher degrees.

Chinese citizens interested in civil service in Shanghai have to sign up on the website of the Shanghai Administration of Civil Service (www.shacs.gov.cn) or another website operated by the city’s human resources authorities (www.21cnhr.gov.cn).

It will remain open until next Monday.
