Drug user’s loan-cheat mom given suspended sentence
A woman who cheated her neighbors out of 400,000 yuan (US$64,000) to fund her son’s drug habit has been sentenced to three years in prison with a five-year reprieve for fraud, the Baoshan District People’s Court said yesterday.
The woman, Xu Yuyan, borrowed the money from her neighbors but never paid them back. She was given a reprieve as she is suffering with breast cancer. She had also given back some of the money and promised to return the rest.
Xu’s son became addicted to drugs in 2007 and ran up huge debts. His mother tried to fund the habit with her own savings but soon ran out of money and started borrowing in 2008.
She later fled to her hometown in Zhejiang Province, where she was captured by police on September 21, 2012.
