Drunk drivers blow the whistle

IT’SNOT rare that people who illegally drive after drinking fool the breath alcohol detector by simply not blowing into it, but Shanghai police will soon block this trick with an adapted detector.

The new version will add a whistle to the mouthpiece to prove the driver really blows into the device.

The adaptation was devised by a traffic police officer in Jinshan District and in recent trials has shown positive results.

The new breathalyzer was tested on Tuesday night n Jinshan District At least three drivers passed the test with the existing model — including one police say smelled clearly of alcohol – but failed the whistle version.

One blew a reading of 85 milligrams per 100 milliliters, more than four times the legal limit of 20mg/100ml.

The new device takes the old mouthpiece and adds a whistle hole in the middle. Police said the new breathalyzer will be introduced in other districts next year.
