Drunk truck driver rams into housing complex, destroying 17 parked cars

A drunk truck driver smashed into a residential complex in Pudong around the midnight, damaging 17 parking cars inside, police said. None was injured.
The 28-year-old driver, surnamed Zhang, from Henan Province, smashed into the parking lot of Nanxindongyuan complex in Gaohang town near Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone with his semi-trailer truck.
He reportedly dragged the truck for 200 meters around within the residential complex after it broke open the fences.
Police confirmed that Zhang was drunk at time of the incident.
Residents told Shanghai Daily they heard noises around 12:45am with some people shouting “wait, stop.”
Car owners said they were not aware of anything till this morning.
Zhou Xun, head of the residential committee, said a guard tried to stop the driver trucks are not allowed inside.
“The driver was stopped at the gate, but he drove on and refused to pull back,” he said.
He said the gate was left open at the time because the guard had gone to fetch hot water.
At the parking lot, the man in charge of collecting parking fees said the driver had come to park at about 8pm on Sunday evening.
No one was injured in the incident. Police said an investigation was underway.
