Drunken expat gets detained in cab grab

A DRUNKEN expat who left a bar and drove off with a taxi while the cabby was away was convicted of dangerous driving and given two months of detention with a fine of 2,000 yuan (US$323), a local court said yesterday.

The convict, identified only as Joseph, is a 34-year-old French, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court said.

The court heard Joseph left the bar on Yueyang Road at around 5:15am on August 10 after drinking with a friend. Prosecutors said Joseph had planned to take a taxi but the cabby was not in the car. He got into the taxi's driver's seat, gunned the engine and drove away.

The cabby, Shen Hu, left the key in the car. After seeing his taxi take off, Shen jumped into another taxi and chased Joseph. Shen stopped him at Fuxing Road M. and Xiangyang Road S. and called police.

Joseph was taken to a hospital, where a blood test showed the alcohol content in his blood was 2.32 micrograms per milliliter, far beyond the legal limit of 0.8mg/ml for drunk driving.
