Drunken joyride ends in friend's death
A YOUNG man went on a heavy drinking session with two friends in the city and then decided to take them for an expressway joyride on his motorcycle - with tragic consequences.
One of his friends died when Wang Jianbi lost control of the bike and Wang himself was seriously injured, losing a kidney and part of a lung.
Wang is facing Jiading District People's Court charged with a number of offences, including causing death and injury and drunk driving.
Wang, 23, pleaded guilty and asked for probation at the hearing on Thursday.
On the night of April 18, Wang and friends Cheng Xianfeng and Xu Zhenni consumed a large amount of alcohol, the court was told.
Early the next morning, Wang, unlicensed, let his two friends ride pillion on his motorcycle that was also unlicensed.
"I drank a lot and didn't think much of the consequences," Wang said.
Since the road was empty, Wang rode the motorcycle on the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, where motorcycles are banned, prosecutors said.
When the motorcycle was nearing the Cao'an exit, Wang said Chen asked him to speed up to overtake a vehicle ahead. Wang accelerated and lost control.
The motorcycle hit a cement block and the impact caused Wang and Cheng to fall from the expressway to the ground. Xu fell on the expressway, prosecutors said.
Cheng died at the scene and Wang was hospitalized for some time. Xu was only slightly injured.
A reading showed Wang had 2.07 milligrams of alcohol in every milliliter of blood.
Prosecutors suggested a prison sentence of two to three years for Wang, who was once jailed for robbery and larceny.
Wang's lawyer asked the court to grant him probation considering his poor health.
A verdict has not yet been made.
