Dumpling frenzy as hundreds queue up
HUNDREDS of people queued up on Fuzhou Road for up to eight hours early yesterday morning for a new type of Qingtuan, the traditional food of the Qingming Festival, which falls on Monday.
As of 10am, the queue in front of Xinhualou’s main store stretched about 250 meters, prompting local police to send officers to maintain order.
People who showed up after 8am were told not to queue any more, as there was no chance of getting any.
The shop sold more than 50,000 Qingtuan in one day.
The city-wide obsession with the glutinous green dumplings started when the local institution launched a new variation on the time-honored favorite, using salted egg yolk and pork rather than the traditional sweet bean paste as a filler. The excitement intensified when news of the innovation went viral online after those who managed to buy some showed them off on social websites.
Over the past few days, a box costing 48 yuan (US$7), containing six green dumplings, has soared to at least 200 yuan due to scalping.
“I came here at about 6:15 am, when the queue was already about 20 meters,” a resident in the queue, Ding Ning, 24, told Shanghai Daily. “Everyone can buy three boxes at most, which was cut from five boxes yesterday.”
Ding said he even booked a hotel room nearby, spending over 200 yuan, so he could queue up early.
Sun Chunli, manager of the company, told Shanghai Daily the supply was limited because all Qingtuan have to be made fresh.
“We really didn’t expect there to be such heavy demand,” she said.
