Duo arrested for stealing 150,000 yuan carrier pigeons

TWO men in suburban Shanghai have been arrested for stealing 150,000 yuan (US$22,000) worth of carrier pigeons, police said on Sunday.

The owner of the pigeons, a man surnamed Wang who lives in Baihe Town, Qingpu District, reported the theft to the police recently after finding over 50 of the expensive birds gone overnight, leaving behind open cages.

Through street surveillance cameras, police spotted a suspicious white car with which the suspects drove the stolen pigeons away and nailed the two in a residential house in the same town shortly after.

The suspects allegedly owned up and one of them, a man surnamed Wu, is an acquaintance of Wang and once raised carrier pigeons himself.

Wu said he thought of stealing the birds because he was short of money, police said.

Up till now, 30 stolen pigeons have been recovered from three locations in Baoshan District and Wu’s hometown out of Shanghai, while police are still investigating whereabouts of the rest.
