Duo sentenced for smuggling dozens of Vietnamese into China

TWO men were sentenced up to eight years in prison for smuggling dozens of Vietnamese into China, Fengxian District People's Court said yesterday.

Vietnamese citizen Tran Dinh Hang and his local friend, surnamed Fu, were found guilty of smuggling more than 60 Vietnamese into the country. They earned about 2,000 yuan per person and made at least 120,000 yuan within a year, according to the court.

Tran had been working in Shanghai for several years when friends in Vietnam asked him to help his fellow villagers enter China and get a job. In 2012, Tran and Fu started working together. Tran contacted some Vietnamese traffickers to bring them to the border and then arranged meals and accommodation for them once they crossed into China, according to the court.

Fu was responsible for forging identity cards and finding jobs for them.

Shanghai police caught Tran and Fu in June 2013.

The court also said Tran would be deported after he serves his sentence.
