Dutch tulips to brighten up the city
SHANGHAI residents and students are encouraged to take part in the planting of thousands of Dutch tulips beginning from next week.
Now is the best time to plant the seeds, which are expected to blossom around March.
The seeds can be brought home by residents or used to decorate public areas in their communities, according to Clover Nature School, a non-profit organization that has been invited to guide the citywide planting and promoting of the tulips presented by the Dutch consulate.
Expatriates are also encouraged to take part in the event.
“Shanghai has a suitable climate and over a decade of experience on tulip planting,” said Liu Yueran, a professor with Tongji University and the founder of the nature school, which focuses on the redevelopment of gardens of old communities as well as providing agricultural education to children.
About 1,000 of the red and orange tulip seeds will be planted at the Knowledge and Innovation Community Garden, an innovative park for startups, in Yangpu District near Fudan University.
