Eggs and vegetables fail tests
THE city’s food and drug administration found four batches of eggs containing a banned substance for laying hens in a safety spot check.
The authority tested a total of 465 batches of agricultural products sold in Shanghai supermarkets or other venues during the inspection, and six batches failed tests.
As well as four batches of eggs that were found with Florfenicol, two batches of vegetables had excessive pesticide residues.
Florfenicol is used as a medicine to treat bacterial diseases in pigs, chickens or fish, and is approved by the Ministry of Agriculture. However, it is not allowed to be used in laying poultry due to residues in eggs.
According to the authority, the eggs that failed the tests were mainly produced outside the city on February 3 and 6.
The authority ordered local market watchdogs to launch investigation against operators that sold the substandard food.
The matter will also be noted in the offending companies’ food safety credit profile.
