Elderly couple die in blaze

AN elderly couple died yesterday when fire engulfed their home in Qingpu District, Xinmin Evening News reported. Both 84-year-old Li and his 81-year-old wife, surnamed Cai, were physically disabled, the report said, without elaborating. The fire broke out about 7:45am and the emergency services were alerted to it by a neighbor. The blaze was brought under control by 8:35am, but firefighters were unable to save the couple. Cai was pronounced dead at the scene, while Li succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
