Elderly victims of telecom scam
A NATIONWIDE telecom fraud involving a gang of women who cheated elderly citizens has come to light with the detention of dozens of suspects, Fengxian District police said.
The women were mostly in their 20s — the youngest only 17 years old. They swindled over 2 million yuan (US$329,400) from at least 2,200 cases, with 100 of them in Shanghai.
The women essentially targeted the elderly. An 84-year-old man, surnamed Li, was one of the Shanghai victims who paid the caller over 80,000 yuan in a month. He lived with a son who suffered from autism. But a call from a “volunteer” claiming to be from the China Ageing Development Foundation warmed his heart. The girl recommended some expensive tonic to Li and asked him to pay huge membership fees.
