Electric bikes broke the rules

THE city’s quality watchdog seized 85 electric bikes yesterday for being able to exceed the speed limit and weighing too much, officials said.

The bikes were made at three factories in Qingpu and Songjiang districts and Pudong New Area, said Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau. They bore the brands of Jielin, Kaipingniao and Ouge.

The maximum speed for electric bikes is 24 kilometers per hour, and they should not weigh more than 40 kilograms, according to China’s national standard. Some bikes were found to have a speed of 27 kilometers per hour. Electric bikes that are too fast increase the risk of brake failure, side-slipping and overturning, and fracture of main structures might occur due to increased loading, threatening the safety of riders, officials said.

The bikes were priced around 1,000 yuan (US$150).
