Ele.me fraud suspects detained
THREE suspects involved in a fraud case concerning the food ordering website ele.me have been detained, police said.
They are said to have registered about 50 non-existing restaurants at the Shanghai-based website and made a profit of 570,000 yuan (US$83,000) by laying fake orders to get subsidies from the website.
One suspect surnamed Tian, who was a chief sales manager of the website in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu, is said to have employed another suspect surnamed Zhang as a salesperson.
With fake licenses and documents, Zhang managed to register those restaurants at the website, while the third suspect, surnamed Li, recruited people to lay the orders with fake accounts, according to the police.
Tian said that all licenses and documents prepared by the sales staff were subject to review by the company’s headquarters in Shanghai.
He estimated that from March to May, fake orders worth about 4 million yuan were laid through the fake restaurants.
Police said investigation into the affair was still under way.
