Elevated Metro stops get barriers

SAFETY barriers are to be installed on the platforms of all elevated subway stations, local Metro authority said yesterday.

This will bring them into line with underground Metro stations and comes after a number of incidents in which passengers at elevated stations ended up on the tracks.

Work installing security barriers with doors on all elevated stations of Metro lines 1, 2, 5 and 6 will be complete by end of this year, said Metro operator Shanghai Shentong.

Installation of the barriers on Metro lines 3 and 4 will be completed next year, it added.

The barrier program was launched last year, following delays until the platforms were insulated.

Among incidents on elevated Metro lines, in April, a woman said to have mental problems leapt off the platform at Metro Line 1’s Wenshui Road Station and ran along the track. She was found by police at the next stop.

In January, two men reported to be drunk fell onto the tracks in incidents at stations on lines 1 and 5.
