Elevators break down over lack of coolers

About one third of the 26 elevators at a residential complex in Zhabei District malfunctioned on Tuesday, forcing residents to walk up to their apartments as high as 30th floor.

The Mingyuan Senlindushi residential community on Gonghexin Road has 26 elevators and nine of them broke down between 5:30pm to well past 10pm on Tuesday.

A technician surnamed Yang said the elevators broke down frequently in the complex because there was no air-conditioning or electric fans in the engine rooms.

“The protection device of the elevators snaps because they are not cooled, and it was worsened by the heat wave,” he said.

He said the rate of elevator malfunction at the complex was at least five times more than other communities.

A resident surnamed Wu said both the elevators in his building broke down at 5:30pm and was not fixed until 10pm.

“It took me 27 minutes to reach my apartment on the 30th floor,” he complained.
