Embezzlers appeal for leniency
TWO former university officials who were sent to prison for embezzling funds yesterday had their appeal against the rulings heard at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court.
Huang Aimin, 48, and Ao Hong, 47, were sentenced to 12 and 10 years, respectively, for stealing almost 1.5 million yuan (US$231,000) from their employer, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, between 2008 and 2012, the court said yesterday.
They were both also fined 80,000 yuan at their initial trial, the date of which was not stated in a statement from the appeal court.
The embezzled funds were paid to the college for animal research projects, an area in which the two defendants specialized.
While Huang and Ao admitted misappropriating the money, they lodged an appeal on the grounds that the sentences were too harsh.
They claimed that embezzlement was commonplace at their college, and that they were being victimized. The appeal court did not reach a decision yesterday.
