Embezzlers' compliance gets jail term

A real estate company manager has been sentenced to three years in prison with a three-year probation for helping a government employee to embezzle 1.1 million yuan (US$162,003), Jing'an District People's Court said yesterday.

Li Wei, who helped Li Zhihong, general manager of the State-owned Changjiang Haoyuan Real Estate Ltd, to steal the money, was given the sentence although he was not a government employee.

The crime came to light when Jiao Zichun, the chairman of state-owned Changjiang Computer Group, confessed in court on August 12 that he took 2 million yuan in bribes and embezzled 1.48 million yuan of public fund. He told Li Zhihong to embezzle the money from Haoyuan, a subsidiary of the group.

The court has not given a verdict on Jiao yet.

Li Zhihong gave 1.48 million yuan to Jiao and kept 300,000 yuan for herself. Of the total graft, 1.1 million yuan was obtained with help from Li Wei.

Li Wei got a relocation project from Haoyuan in June 2004 and lent Li Zhihong 800,000 yuan for private use in order to secure the contract.

When the project was completed in 2006, Li Zhihong added 1.1 million yuan as reward to Li Wei's company.

Li Zhihong said 800,000 yuan of the 1.1 million was her debt payment and Li Wei was supposed to give her the rest 300,000 yuan in cash. In this way, Li Zhihong embezzled 1.1 million yuan from her own company with Li Wei's help, the court said.
