End of the road for elms
ALL of the elm trees along Beiyan Road in Chongming County have been cut down as a safety precaution, officials said. A popular food source for hungry caterpillars, many of the trees had become hollow and were prone to toppling over in high winds. The caterpillars had also become a nuisance to pedestrians and needed to be eradicated, the authorities said. Over time, the elms will be replaced by pond cypress trees, official said.
