Escalator fault closes subway link

NO one was hurt yesterday when an escalator at Hongkou Football Stadium Metro station malfunctioned.
The Metro operator reported the incident to maintenance company Shanghai Mitusbishi, which sent technicians to assess the situation, and also shut down two other escalators — pending safety checks — as a precautionary measure.
The incident forced the closure of the tunnel that connects Lines 3 and 8, and people had to transfer between the two lines by the above-ground route.
The city’s quality watchdog said the malfunction was likely due to something getting caught in the escalator’s mechanism.
