Escalator had worn-out chain

INITIAL investigations suggest that a worn out chain that snapped caused an escalator accident at a Metro station this month in which 13 people were injured, the city’s quality watchdog said yesterday.

The chain at Jing’an Temple Station was in poor condition, probably  due to heavy use, said Shen Weimin, deputy director of the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau.

The escalator was manufactured by Guangzhou Otis Elevator Co and went into use five years ago. Otis Shanghai is responsible for its maintenance.

It has not yet been established whether Otis Shanghai was at fault, he said.

The escalator underwent a maintenance check in late March.

Shen said it is still too early to say whether potential hazards were detected during maintenance.

The investigation is continuing.

The upward-moving escalator abruptly headed down at 8:20am on April 2, sending commuters tumbling.
