Everything is beautiful at the cherry blossom park
NEARLY 80,000 visitors flocked to Gucun Park during the first weekend of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which started on Wednesday.
With more than 12,000 cherry blossom trees, the park in north Baoshan District has long been a popular place to enjoy the spring blossom.
On Saturday, 57,000 people visited the park, but the numbers dropped to 22,000 yesterday due to continuous rainfall and colder temperature.
There are more than 80 types of cherry blossom in an area covering some 800,000 square meters in the park. This year, more than 20,000 square meters of tulips in the park are set to bloom soon.
Most of the cherry flowers will bloom from today, making it the most beautiful period of the park, an official with the park said.
About 2,000 late cherries are expected to bloom in early April, when colorful cherry flowers in red, pink, yellow and green will create a spectacular sight, the official added. By early May it will all be over, he added.
Last year, about 1.6 million people visited during the month-long festival — with a record 168,000 flocking to the park on its peak day.
More than 1,100 police officers and fire fighters will be on duty at the park over the weekend to ensure safety, the district government said. Drivers are being guided away from congested roads and full parking areas near the park.
Authorities have this year set aside 2,000 extra parking spaces near the park, creating room for 5,400 cars in total.
Tickets for this year’s event cost 20 yuan (US$3) for adults and 10 yuan for students. A 4-yuan discount is offered to people from 60 to 64 years old on production of a valid identity card or passport. Visitors over 65 have free admission.
