Ex-boss of 'heroic' ayi seeks return of reward
A DOMESTIC helper in Shanghai who received nationwide praise in October for rescuing her neighbor in a traffic accident but later had the story unravel is being sued by her former boss for the return of 1,000 yuan (US$161) he said he gave her as a reward.
The ex-boss, Yang Qiaoxing, said he recently filed suit to demand the return of the money he gave He Yihong, an ayi who was registered with his agency, for her bravery after media reports that the ayi was seriously injured when she pushed the neighbor out of the way to save her life.
He Yihong is still hospitalized, recovering from fractures received in the accident in Minhang District. The other woman, Li Fen, wasn't seriously hurt.
"I filed the lawsuit because He had misled so many people to believe she was a heroine and donate money to her," Yang said yesterday.
"Rescuers and witnesses on the scene could prove what I say," Yang said.
He was lionized by the media and the public after the story of her bravery was reported.
Yang said he learned from a fellow hospital patient of He's that contributions that poured in from around the nation had exceeded 300,000 yuan.
"She took the money into her own pocket, taking it for granted. But as far as I know, all her medical expense is covered by the driver who knocked her down," Yang said.
He could not be reached by telephone yesterday. The hospital where she is staying said He was in recovery but would say no more.
Li originally backed the story of He's heroism, but now she said was confused at that time.
She said she to told media that He saved her only to comfort He.
Li said she felt it was improper to mislead the public and finally chose to tell the truth.
"What can I say in that kind of situation?" Li told a Youth Daily reporter.
