Excessive radiation in tablet computers

SOME domestic tablet computers on sale in Shanghai release excessive radiation, according to tests by China's top quality watchdogs.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine tested 52 types of portable electronic products produced in Shanghai, Guangdong, Beijing and Tianjin, and found quality problems with 15.

Several brands of tablet computers - including Skyworth, Kupa and Archos - were found to release excess radiation. Most of these products were produced in Shenzhen in Guangdong Province, said the administration.

Exposure to high-level radiation damages the circulation system and raises the risk of contracting cancer, experts say.

Shanghai authorities did not comment on the inspection results yesterday.

Earlier, the administration said some said domestic-manufactured oolong tea products, including one bearing the brand Lipton, were found to contain excessive amounts of rare-earth content.
