Ex-director makes plea

A FORMER town official from Chongming County's Gangyan Town has appealed to a court to commute his 18-year sentence, saying that most of the corruption charges are false.

Lu Xianhui, former deputy director of the town, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in January by the Chongming County People's Court for embezzling 1.96 million yuan (US$297,872) in public assets and taking 514,000 yuan in bribes last year. His personal property amounting to 700,000 yuan was also confiscated.

Lu argued that he embezzled only about 700,000 yuan and didn't accept any bribes in the appeal hearing held at the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court on Thursday.

He drew out more than 1.96 million yuan in cash in the guise of tax returns and received commissions totaling 514,000 yuan for issuing overstated tax invoices. That sum of money was ruled to be bribes by the county court.

Lu said he only took some 700,000 yuan of the 1.96 million yuan for himself and spent the rest on social -activities when entertaining potential -investors in the town.
