Exhibition presents smart ways to stay safe

A host of weird and wonderful personal protection products went on display yesterday at the 14th Shanghai International Exhibition on Public Safety and Security.

Among the items designed with women in mind were two from Shanghai Security Service Corp, which disguises its devices as cosmetics products.

The first was a stun baton in the shape of a perfume bottle. In the event of being attacked, the owner can use it to give a small electric shock to her assailant, company representative Yang Xiajun said.

But the device is not available to just anyone.

“People have to provide a document from their employer to show they need such a device,” he said.

He added that owners are advised not to carry the batons through security checkpoints at airports or railway stations.

The company’s second gadget was a pepper spray, which dispenses a noxious mix of capsaicin, benzene and compressed air, but looks like a lipstick.

As well as items designed for handbags, the company also makes heavy-duty security gear, Yang said.

“We supplied the equipment to the SWAT teams that covered the Asia regional summit two weeks ago,” he said.

Among the other devices on show was an e-camera developed by local electronics company Howell, which people can use to monitor their homes remotely. It also enables users to communicate with people inside the property via their cellphones and iPads.

Meanwhile, a device made by Shenzhen-based technology company Zhirui allows underground car park operators to record the license plates of vehicles entering their facilities.

“It dispenses with the need for parking tickets,” a sales representative said.

More than 300 manufacturers are attending the exhibition, which runs until tomorrow at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center in the Pudong New Area.
