Ex-official gets 11 years for bribery

A FORMER division chief of the city government has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for accepting 965,000 yuan (US$14,189) in bribes, holding unaccountable property worth 8.49 million yuan and stashing deposits offshore, the Jing'an District People's Court said yesterday.

Xu Shaomin, a former division chief at the Shanghai Economic and Information Technology Development Commission, used to be responsible for issuing funds to encourage the development of the local software and semiconductor industry.

The court said Xu took advantage of his position to introduce business to five companies and accepted bribes from the owners.

Xu repatriated a total of 735,085 yuan to a Hong Kong account to buy stocks in his and his wife's name in 2007.

The court said that Xu's family property exceeded their legal income, including assets of 8.49 million yuan with unknown provenience.

The bribes and illegal property were confiscated. Moreover, Xu was also fined 100,000 yuan.
