Expat donations help students

EXPATS in Shanghai have donated about 1.85 million yuan (US$296,203.8) to help needy students with their education as part of the Shanghai Sunshine program, the Shanghai Charity Foundation said yesterday.

More than 400 students have benefitted so far this year, it revealed.

A total of 115 students who received the aid had a meeting with 88 individual donors or company representatives during the 2012 Shanghai Sunrise Paring Ceremony held yesterday.

Qiu Bo'er, a beneficiary, said the program had helped her finish her university program and land a good job in one of the top 500 multinational companies. Her father doesn't have a job and her mother has been bed-ridden for a long time. She began receiving the program sponsorship from high school onwards and graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University last year.

Shanghai Sunrise is a charitable program under the umbrella of the Shanghai Charity Foundation and is led by a board of committed volunteers.
