Expo development complete by year end

A HUGE redevelopment project on part of the former World Expo 2010 site will be complete by the end of this year, officials said yesterday.

The Zone A site in the Pudong New Area is home to the iconic China Art Museum — the former China Pavilion that drew 17 million visitors at the expo.

The development includes a massive underground complex linking the remaining Expo pavilions, plus new buildings for top state-owned enterprises, officials said.

Called Green Valley and featuring a large square of trees, the project will include eight blocks covering 360,000 square meters, an official with the Shanghai Expo Development Group said yesterday.

The over and underground site will become a hub for business, leisure and accommodation, said the official.

The Shanghai Pudong Development Bank and the group paid 6 billion yuan (US$960 million) for the land — the highest price for a former Expo site.

The area will include a 150-meter iconic building that will be offices for state-owned enterprises.

Green Valley will also feature a three-level underground parking area for 9,000 vehicles, a power station and walkways connecting to Metro Line 8 China Art Museum station.

Redevelopment is also in full swing at the former Expo Zone B in Pudong, which will be headquarters of some of the top state-owned companies.

A total of 13 state-owned enterprises, including Baosteel and State Grid, have signed contracts to move offices there.

The site will feature 28 buildings, featuring environmentally-friendly materials.

Other tenants there will include Sinochem Group, China Changjiang National Shipping Group and the Commercial Aircraft Corp of China.
