Expo thieves given jail sentences

SEVEN thieves caught at the Expo site were yesterday handed down prison sentences ranging from 10 months to 4 1/2 years.

Besides, Shao Haibo, a scalper who bought the stolen items, was jailed for a year.

Judges at the Pudong New Area People's Court said they will continue to crack down on crimes at the Expo site.

The judges said five of the eight criminals, aged between 21 and 42, had criminal records. They usually stole cell phones, cameras and camera lens from tourists. The three cases involving the seven thieves all occurred inside Expo pavilions.

"While visitors were concentrating on the pavilion shows and exhibits, the thieves stole things from their backpacks," said Lu Wende, a senior judge of the court.

In one case, Liu Wenquan, 34, a Sichuan Province native, visited the Expo site on May 12-16 and stole four mobile phones and a Sony camera when visitors were enjoying dance performances in the India and Spain pavilions.
