Ex-senior official jailed for bribery

A FORMER section chief of Baoshan District government was yesterday sentenced to 10 years in prison for accepting nearly 230,000 yuan (US$33,774) in bribes.

The Baoshan District People's Court ruled that Chen Xialing, a former section chief of the Baoshan District Science and Technology Commission, took advantage of his position to introduce business to three companies and accept bribes from the company owners.

Chen, 42, was in charge of approving and recommending companies to get capital from two projects designed to support scientific companies - the innovation fund and the scientific giant fund - from 2007 to September 2009.

Chen helped a local agency to get the business to apply for the funds for a few companies during the period and approved the application. The agency, thus, earned lots of commission.

In return, Chen got 199,000 yuan in cash from the agency's manager.

From 2008 to 2009, Chen used his position to help two scientific companies gain approval for funds from the projects and accepted 30,000 yuan from the firms, the court heard.

Chen pleaded guilty at yesterday's hearing and his family has returned all the money.
