Ex-soldier ‘tried to rob villa with toy gun’
A 41-year-old man suspected of trying to rob a villa in Songjiang District using a fake bomb and a toy gun has been arrested, prosecutors said.
The unemployed man told prosecutors that he decided to commit the robbery because he was cheated by employment agencies and had no money to see a doctor for cancer treatment.
The bomb was made of black tape, sausages and an electronic watch that the former military explosives specialist purchased at a grocery on March 27.
He went to a villa occupied by an elderly couple, prosecutors claim, and threatened their housekeeper with the fake gun to gain entry.
The female occupant of the villa confronted him, called the police and managed to persuade him to hand over his fake gun and bomb.
