Ex-subway drivers guilty of jobs scam
THREE former subway train drivers who cheated 12 people out of 387,000 yuan (US$60,000) by claiming they could help them to secure driving jobs have been sentenced to suspended prison terms, Shanghai Railway Transportation Court said yesterday.
The crimes were committed between 2013 and last year.
Three of the victims were already employees of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co, while the nine others were seeking work at the company, the court said.
The three defendants, surnamed Zhu, Bao and Zhao, also offered to provide counterfeit college degrees Ñ a basic requirement for all subway drivers Ñ to those victims who were not graduates, it said.
Zhu resigned from the company in July 2013 after three yearsÕ service, while Bao and Zhao were dismissed soon after their crimes came to the attention of their employer.
Between January to February 2013, Zhao cheated a colleague out of 25,000 yuan.
Later the same year, Zhu and Bao cheated two other employees out of a combined 30,000 yuan.
Last year, the three men operated a similar swindle, but their victims were all people looking for a job at the subway company.
When no jobs were forthcoming, several of the victims complained to the police, and an investigation was started.
Prosecutors said that all three men confessed to their crimes when questioned, adding that they had also since returned all of the money to the 12 victims.
Zhao was sentenced to three yearsÕ jail suspended for four years, Zhu to three yearsÕ suspended for three years and Bao to two yearsÕ suspended for two years.
No information was provided as to whether or not Shanghai Shentong had undertaken its own investigation into the matter.
