Extra security patrols as parks extend hours
NEARLY 90 parks in Shanghai will step up security when they extend their opening hours between May 1 and October 31, officials said yesterday.
Downtown’s Jing’an Park, which normally closes at 6pm or 7pm, will extend its operating hours to 9pm, while Fuxing Park in Huangpu District will close three hours later than usual, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
“The extension aims to satisfy the leisure and physical exercise needs of residents, and allow them to take a pleasant summer evening stroll,” said Lu Jianping, deputy director of the bureau.
Parks involved in the plan have been ordered to add extra security officers, increase the frequency of patrols and conduct checks on guardrails, lighting systems, surveillance cameras, steps and signboards to ensure the security of evening strollers, Lu said.
Zhongshan Park in Changning District plans to open 24 hours a day, but its 20,000 square meters of aquatic features require various additional security measures.
