Exuberant azalea blossoms at Binjiang Forest Park

THE Shanghai Binjiang Forest Park is bathed in red, pink and violet colors ahead of the start of the Shanghai Azalea Exhibition tomorrow.

The park, which covers 120 hectares in the Pudong New Area where the Huangpu and Yangtze rivers meet, will have close to 400 varieties of blooming azalea on display, including two 200-year-old, 2.3-meter-high azalea trees of rare violet color.

The azalea garden covers an area of 6.6 hectares and is awash in luxuriant colors.

Some azalea shrubs are arranged over hills, rocks, river and next to waterfall along with other plants such as maple and hackberry.

An azalea bonsai display will also be presented.

The exhibition runs through early May. The period between the Qingming Festival on April 5 and May Day holiday is the prime blossoming period.

The park’s other flowers such as Chinese violet cress, peach flower, magnolia, cherry and redleaf cherry plum are already in full bloom.

A shutterbug contest, a calligraphy/painting exhibition and orienteering events have been planned during the exhibition.

The Zuibaichi and Fangta parks in Songjiang District will also display azaleas, blending the flower exhibition with the classic gardens.

Along with primrose and gentian, the trio are known as “the beauty queens of flowers in China.”

Azalea in Chinese culture is hailed as “thinking of home bush,” or sixiang shu, and was immortalized by Chinese Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu (712-770).
