Eye damage man wins compensation
A LOCAL medical school graduate whose right eye was damaged in a freak accident during an internship has been awarded compensation of more than 90,000 yuan (US$13,595) from the Shanghai No. 9 People's Hospital.
When the intern, surnamed Cao, was removing a layer from a porcelain tooth using a sand-blasting machine on March 25, 2009, the machine's sand tank lid suddenly sprung open, hitting Cao's right eye and cheekbone. The retina in his right eye was irreparably damaged. The Huangpu District People's Court judged that the hospital should bear major responsibility, although noting that the intern should have worn protective glasses.
