Fake Rolex and Viagra trio enter guilty plea
THREE people yesterday pleaded guilty to running and assisting a 2.8 million yuan (US$442,400) business selling fake Viagra and counterfeit Rolex watches.
Prosecutors at Yangpu District People's Court said that in 2010 Liu Zhongbao, 30, and Wang Yongqiang, 31, hired people to build a website to sell counterfeit Rolex watches.
The third accused, Xia Weibao, 40, ran a logistics company that helped Liu and Wang deliver their merchandise.
The three pleaded guilty to selling counterfeit goods and asked the court for a lighter punishment.
Liu and Wang placed advertisements in local newspapers and websites to attract clients to buy fake Viagra, the court heard.
Liu said the bogus goods were bought in south China's Guangdong Province and he was in charge of delivering goods from Shanghai.
Xia claimed he did not know the others were conducting illegal business until clients complained. "People reported the case to me, but I didn't treat them seriously," Xia told the court.
Liu said he earned more than 200,000 yuan by selling fake Viagra and Rolex watches - 10 times the sum he had invested in the business.
His two business partners, Wang and a third man named Guo Jianguo who was tried separately, each made 150,000 yuan.
Prosecutors said the total sales volume involved was more than 2.8 million.
Liu, Wang and Xia were detained last August. Police seized 49 bottles of fake Viagra and 363 counterfeit Rolex watches in their office in Zhabei District.
The court did not announce a verdict.
